Murray's Dutch Mirror

چکیده

In the Netherlands, the second decade of the nineteenth century not only saw the end of the socalled 'French period', but also the publication of a Dutch version of Lindley Murray's English Grammar. Is there any relation between the two ? One might argue that there was. In 1795, when Murray's English grammar was published in York, the federalist Republic of the Seven United Provinces was transformed into the so called Batavian Republic, a close ally of France. Later on, this republic became the Kingdom of Holland, which became an official part of France in 1810. In 1813, the Kingdom of the Netherlands came into existence when the country was liberated from French occupation. Due to the prolonged French influence many political and cultural changes had taken place, leading to administrative and educational reforms which had a long lasting effect. These reforms included a government regulation concerning the written Dutch language, something which had never existed before. Commissioned by the government, the Rotterdam clergyman, Pieter Weiland (1754-1842), wrote the Nederduitsche Spraakkunst ('Dutch Grammar'), published in 1805, and the Leiden professor of Dutch Language, Matthijs Siegenbeek (1774-1854), devised a spelling system in 1804. In the wake of the government efforts to reform the entire system of (primary) education (cf. Wilhelm 1993:68-71)

Mirror symmetry in Dutch

Dutch PPs show mirror symmetry with respect to the embedded verb. In older theories, this was partially accounted for by an extraposition rule known as PP-over-V. In the theoretical framework adopted here, such rightward movements are no longer available. The theory assumed instead is strictly local in that only adjacent elements and elements in an immediate dominance relation can be part of co...

Can Mirror-Reading Reverse the Flow of Time?

Across cultures, people conceptualize time as if it flows along a horizontal timeline, but the direction of this implicit timeline is culture-specific: in cultures with left-to-right orthography (e.g., English-speaking cultures) time appears to flow rightward, but in cultures with right-to-left orthography (e.g., Arabic-speaking cultures) time flows leftward. Can orthography influence implicit ...

The evaluation of Murray's law in Psilotum nudum (Psilotaceae), an analogue of ancestral vascular plants.

Previous work has shown that the xylem of seed plants follows Murray's law when conduits do not provide structural support to the plant. Here, compliance with Murray's law was tested in the stem photosynthesizer Psilotum nudum, a seedless vascular plant. Psilotum nudum was chosen because the central stele does not provide structural support, which means that Murray's law is applicable, and beca...

Analysis of the optimality principles responsible for vascular network architectonics

The equivalence of two optimality principles leading to Murray's law has been discussed. The first approach is based on minimization of biological work needed for maintaining the blood flow through the vessels at required level. The second one is the principle of minimal drag and lumen volume. Characteristic features of these principles are considered. An alternative approach leading to Murray'...

Biomimetic design of microfluidic manifolds based on a generalised Murray's law.

The relationship governing the optimum ratio between the diameters of the parent and daughter branches in vascular systems was first discovered by Murray using the principle of minimum work. This relationship is now known as Murray's law and states that the cube of the diameter of the parent vessel must equal the sum of the cubes of the daughter vessels. For symmetric bifurcations, an important...
